Dental ImplantsPortland, ME
There are a wide variety of reasons a person could require a dental implant, ranging from congenitally missing teeth or a badly fractured tooth, to a cavity that has progressed too long, making it non-restorable. Regardless of what causes the need, dental implants often provide the best option for total tooth replacement.
At Inspire Dental, we can routinely provide complete services starting with the initial consultation to the surgical placement of implant body and (usually about 2-3 months later) the final crown restoration.
Initial Consultation
Your initial consultation, usually begins with a 3-D xray to determine whether there is sufficient bone to support the implant. That same day, we sometimes also take a 3D surface impression scan, which is used in cases where a surgical guide is required. In other cases, an implant can be placed on the same day as a tooth is extracted - as is often the case with a fractured painfully symptomatic tooth. Of course, there are several variations to the order of events and how best to place the implant. Rest assured, we will take time to explain the specifics to your individual circumstances.

Osseointegration
Once the dental implant has been placed, we usually wait about 2-3 months before we can “load” it - which means to place a crown on the implant, strong enough to withstand the forces of chewing food. Why wait? Studies show, that dental implants succeed more often, if you give the body time to heal and grow bone onto the surface of the implant. This process is called “osseointegration.”
Once an implant is osseointegrated - it is safe to place an abutment and free-staning implant crown on it and apply chewing force. To you, the patient, it will look and feel very much like a natural tooth.
“The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the survival and success rates of osseointegrated implants determined in longitudinal studies that conducted a follow-up of at least 10 years.
…we may affirm that osseointegrated implants are safe and present high survival rates and minimal marginal bone resorption in the long term.
